Under the polygenic multiplicative model, the increasing line shows the lifetime risk as a function of familial risk ratio for a disease with average lifetime risk 10%,r= 0.5 and OR = 2. The distribution of familial risk ratio for the population is shown as a normal density curve with mean = median. Q1 and Q3 are the lower and upper quartiles, respectively. RL and RU are the lifetime risks for people in the lower and upper quartiles, respectively. The dotted line indicates average (mean) lifetime risk. RU/RL is at least 20; see Table 1 and Hopper & Carlin (1992).
